5 Things Successful Salespeople Do Differently

Published by : Emeline Gleitz

Success is Earned

Success is earned.

You can’t reach a certain level of success without effort. In the end, success isn’t a question of education or “hard skills,” but more a question of “soft skills.”

These traits and behaviours arise from a conscious decision to succeed.

Because you choose to succeed, every individual has the potential. Regardless your path or career, the key to success is similar - and so is the road to success in sales.

Far from being only a means for career advancement, success is first and foremost a personal endeavour. Here are 5 tips that will help you on the road to success.

Discover the 21 core skills of the best performing salespeople

Commit to Your Success

By committing to your success, you make a pact with yourself, and that commitment fuels your motivation.

Commitment helps you overcome obstacles and deal with situations that make you uncomfortable. At Prima Resource, we call this unconditional commitment. Simple commitment isn’t enough; it has to be total if you want to succeed.

Expect to Fail

You can’t achieve success without experiencing failure along the way! So don’t consider mistakes or failure as the end, but rather as learning opportunities.

If you’re afraid to fail, you’re not living life to its fullest, and you'll end up with regrets. You need to detach yourself from this fear to succeed.

Taking risks requires courage, and even if it’s not instant, courage is always rewarded.

Don’t Make Excuses

Circumstances are what they are. You can’t control everything, so don’t waste time and energy blaming your lack of success on things you can’t change. In sales, where achievement is constantly re-evaluated, you can choose to blame competitors, the economy, prices, or even the company for your shortcomings.

However, to succeed, elite sales representatives choose to act on what they do have power over instead of struggling with “the circumstances.”

Focus on Your Goals

Success requires daily action, not the occasional big leap. Success requires discipline, and you need to focus on small targets that lead to the primary objective.

The best way to focus on your goals is to write them down. The more you do this, the more focused on attaining your goals you will be. Many people make the mistake of setting themselves goals only once a year, but you can do this every month, every week, even every day.

Expect More from Yourself

Success is having a good and healthy relationship with others as well as with yourself.

If you want to succeed, develop a mindset where accomplishment is no longer measured by the amount of time you dedicate to your work for example, but by achievements.

Important

The limits we set ourselves are all in our heads, but so is the key to overcoming them. Everyone has the potential to succeed, but only those who consciously choose to work at achieving every day, regardless of environment or circumstances, will get there.
